Assignment 2

The purpose of the storyboard is to tell with the audiences about a story about a jewellery brand.

Before the actual storyboard, I did a short draft on how it will looks like. From the wedding invitation to client to the final product, the whole process tells about the stories of two individuals and also the design’s inward significance. The design is significant to client as she would be wearing the hair ornaments.

So before I go on, I will do a short introduction of the design. Tian Tsui, or dotting with kingfisher, is a style of Chinese Jewellery art. Tian Tsui symbolises wealth and social standing as it was only available to the Imperial Court. However, it’s illegal to use kingfisher’s feather anymore so I replace with coloured goose feather.

In this storyboard, I’m aiming for oriental feeling which helps to bring the audiences into the story. I decided to tune the colours to more old school using Lightroom so as to bring out the traditional sentiment. Due to the lighting of the original pictures, I lower the exposure and highlights of the pictures and increase the shadows. Next, I used Modern seven for all the pictures as it brings out the blue colour feather. Additionally, most of the pictures I took used the Rule of Third rule of composition. I like to have one focal point in my picture so that the audiences’ attention is only on the main point.

For all the pictures, I used photoshop to make digital pictures suitable for printing. Using what I had learn in class, I change the image dimension to 16 picas to 22picas, 180 pixels/inch. Then I save the files as TIFF.

There are two main objectives that I would like to convey to the audiences. Firstly, I would like to tell the relationship between the jewellery maker and the client. Secondly, I would like to tell the importance of customisable and handmade jewellery pieces.

In the first picture, I received a wedding order from my client. In reality, the client texted me instead of writing a letter. However, I changed the setting such that the client wrote to me, showing the importance of the wedding. For the background, I decided to place a black table cloth to make the setting more grand.

In picture 2, the client and I meet up and discuss about the design of her hair ornament. In the meeting, I prepare a list of questions for her to get a better understanding of her. However, it is hard to show in the picture and therefore the main emphasis will be on the meeting instead.

In picture 3, I started to look for creative idea so that I can design her hair ornament. In the process of designing, I tried to search for symbolism in the design. In Chinese, peony symbolises happy marriage, good fortune and honor. Thus, I decided to use this flower as the overall theme for the design.

In picture 4, I began drawing designs for the hair ornaments. However, it was difficult to show in the communication process with the customer as I sent her the designs and asked her which one she like. It was hard to show the uniqueness and originality of the design in the storyboard.

Picture 5 and 6 show the process of making and assembling the hair ornament. The idea that I want the audience to get is that handmade jewellery take lots of effort as the creator puts in their best effort in making.

In the last picture, the design is done. I took the picture when there’s sunset to bring out the traditional feeling of the hairpin.
